cells with less fluorescent nuclei. The corneal epithelial cellular autofluorescence was most likely due to nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate. At 200 μm, the collagen pattern at the wound is irregularly arranged, which is in sharp contrast to the orthogonal packing of adjacent lamella found in normal stroma (Figure 1H). At imaging depths of 400 μm and beyond, regions lacking in SHG collagen were observed. In addition, the collagen fibers outside of the wound tended to align parallel to the wound edges. At the imaging depths of 1000 and 1200 μm, intense fluorescent lining (possibly from detached uveal tissue) along the wound edge was found (Figure 1I). For comparison, the histological image is shown in Figure 2. Both the surface epithelial cells and the V-shaped corneal wound were visible. At greater depths, we also found granulation tissue (with cells). The existence of the corneal wound and granulation tissue may explain the lack of SHG collagen fibers within the wound.

A Systematic Approach to the Application of Soft Tissue Histopathology in Paleopathology
The application of histology to soft tissue remains offers an important technique to obtain diagnostically important information on various physiological and pathological conditions in paleopathology. In a series of 29 cases with mummified tissue ranging between 16 months and c. 5.200 years of postmortem time interval, we systematically investigated paleohistology and the preservation of variou...
متن کاملThe state of the art of paleoparasitological research in the Old World.
Paleoparasitology in the Old World has mainly concerned the study of latrine sediments and coprolites collected from mummified bodies or archaeological strata, mostly preserved by natural conditions. Human parasites recovered include cestodes, trematodes, and nematodes. The well preserved conditions of helminth eggs allowed paleoepidemiological approaches taking into account the number of eggs ...
متن کاملPaleopathology in South American mummies: a review and new findings.
This article is a review of research and additional unpublished diseases that have been discovered and documented in naturally mummified remains recovered from South America. A new impetus in paleopathological studies was the work and discovery of a solution for rehydration of mummified tissues by Sir Marc Armand Ruffer in 1913. This solution allows the paleopathologist, after performing the au...
متن کاملHistopathological Study of a Mummified Eye and Optic Nerve from a Strangled Peruvian Mummy.
We present the histopathological findings of a naturally mummified eye from the Peruvian Lambayeque culture (900-1,200 AD), in which rehydration, light microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy allowed a detailed analysis of several eye tissues including the eyelids, sclera, and optic nerve, the latter showing evidence of hemorrhage likely related to the documented strangulation as the cause...
متن کاملThe paleopathology of the cardiovascular system.
Paleopathology, the study of disease in ancient remains, adds the dimension of time to our study of health and disease. The oldest preserved heart is from a mummified rabbit of the Pleistocene epoch, over 20,000 years old. Cardiovascular disease has been identified in human mummies from Alaska and Egypt, covering a time span ranging from approximately 3,000 to 300 years ago. An experimental stu...
